PDF Protect

Adding a password means a PDF can only be opened by someone who knows it. This tool encrypts your PDF with a password of your choice, entirely in your browser, so neither the file nor the password is ever sent anywhere.

Files and passwords are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to or stored on our server.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Choose a PDF file (it must not already be password-protected).
  2. Type the password you want required to open it.
  3. Click Protect PDF and download the encrypted file.

Why Use ToolVigo's PDF Protect

  • Standard PDF password encryption, openable by any PDF reader that asks for a password.
  • Password and file never leave your browser.
  • Clear reminder that a lost password cannot be recovered.

Limitations

Uses 40-bit RC4 encryption, which is universally compatible but not strong by modern standards. For highly sensitive documents, consider a stronger, dedicated encryption tool.

Privacy & Security

This tool runs entirely in your browser using a PDF engine built for ToolVigo. Your PDF is never uploaded to our servers — opening, editing and saving all happen on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What encryption does this use?

It uses the PDF standard security handler with RC4 40-bit encryption (PDF 1.1-compatible), which every PDF reader supports. This is adequate for keeping casual or accidental access out, but is not considered strong by modern cryptographic standards — don't rely on it alone for highly sensitive documents.

What if I forget the password?

It cannot be recovered or reset by ToolVigo — we never see or store it. Keep a copy of the password somewhere safe.

Can I remove the password later?

Yes, using the PDF Unlock tool, as long as you know the password.
