What does the contrast formula do?
Each color channel is pushed away from mid-gray (128) by a factor. A factor above 1 increases contrast and below 1 reduces it.
Can too much contrast harm a photo?
Yes. Extreme values clip shadows and highlights to pure black or white, which permanently loses detail in those areas.
